"HISTORY OF AMSTERDAM OLD COURSE

Amsterdam Old Course, only 4 miles from the centre of Amsterdam, is the oldest golf course in Amsterdam and one of the eight still existing Colt, Alison & Morisson designs in the Netherlands.

The club welcomes visitors to enjoy the classic 9-hole course and the wonderful thatched-roof clubhouse, built in 1934 and designed by the famous Dutch architect F.A. Warners.

Water is a feature on most holes of the par-72 course in a lovely, typically Dutch landscape. The par threes are short but will test any class of golfer.

In the beginning, the course operated as a 18-hole facilility on a piece of land owned by the Dutch Railways. In the flat Dutch polder land, the famous golf architect Alison, partner of the firm Colt, Alison and Morrison, created a modern championship course.

Colt and partners were experienced with flat lay-outs after their work in the United States. With plants and lakes they embellished the course. Total costs: 100.000 Dutch guilders.

The 18-hole course, which opened for play in September 1935, was ‘bogey 74’ and 6,000 yards long. The Dutch magazine ‘Golf’ wrote: ‘Without any natural help in this flat terrain – so richly available near the sea, dunes, forest or heather – Alison’s creation is to be admired.’

In 1990 Amsterdam Old Course lost nine of the eighteen holes because the Dutch Railways built new tracks and a train station. However, nine challenging holes are left and five of them are original holes designed by Charles Alison. The original holes have been restored by Dutch architect Frank Pont, who also renovated Royal Hague, De Pan and other Colt courses in the Netherlands.

After a round it is definitely a pleasure to relax at the 19th hole in the comfortable clubhouse or on the sunny terrace. The restaurant ‘Clubhouse Old Course’ offers relaxed dining with views of the golf course."
