The gargoyle is on the front side of the building it. It is made from metal and looks like a lion. It has some flower-like ornaments on the bottom, also made from metal.

About the Gouvernments gebouw, according to the Dutch National Monument register:
"The current accommodation of the Provincial Drents Museum was built as a GOVERNMENT BUILDING for the Provincial Board of Drenthe. It was built in the period 1879 (first design for the Statenzaal)-1887 (the last finishing touches to the building), in a building style inspired by the late Gothic Brick Gothic, mixed with influences from the Dutch Renaissance. The building stands on the site of its predecessor, demolished in 1884. It was originally part of the monastery complex of the Cistercian Abbey of Maria in Campis and was used by the Provincial Government from 1601. The building, oriented towards the Brink, is sandwiched between the Drostenhuis (right), the former Abbey Church (left) and the State Archives (behind). It was built in collaboration with the engineer of Provincial Water Management J.P. Havelaar originated design by Chief Government Architect J. van Lokhorst. The execution of the work was in the hands of the Asser contractor Taeke Boonstra. The former government building has an interior that is still largely in its original state, including murals designed by the Vienna-based artist Georg Sturm and executed by the German Florack brothers. The sculpture of the rear wing and probably also the carved decorations in the front part of the building come from the studio of F. Stoltzenberg from Roermond. The building served as a provincial government building until 1973, after which it was given a museum purpose."
