The monastery church, also known as the abbey church, originally belonged to the Cistercian nunnery Mariënkamp in Assen. In 1276 a charter mentions the presence of the monastery, but it was probably already established in Assen in 1260.

"The Abbey Church, also known as the monastery church, used to be part of the Mariënkamp nunnery in Assen.
In 1601 the tower collapsed, making the church impassable. In 1662 the church was rebuilt and walls were even rebricked. The newly built church became a lot smaller than the original monastery church. This was 40 meters high, the new church only 25 meters. Despite the expansion of the church in 1817, the Abbey Church became too small for the municipality of Assen. In 1848 a new church on Kerkplein was taken into use and the Abbey Church was sold to the municipality.
The municipality of Assen used the monastery church as a town hall from 1851 and even the police station was located here until 1904. After the church was restored in 1982, it became part of the Drents Museum."
