"Nicholas Gotten a native of Spangdahlen, Germany, immigrated to America at the age of 22: worked in the north before coming to Tennessee: established himself as a blacksmith in Union Depot (Bartlett) in 1860: enlisted in the Confederate Army (Co. C. Third Tenn. Cav.) of Forrest's regiment 1862: fought at Shiloh and Corinth: served bravely at Bolivar though severely wounded: was captured, exchanged and served to the end of the war. Returned to Bartlett, was a respected miller and ginner. Invented an improved cotton feeder (Pat. Nov 29, 1881.) Married Julia Coleman in 1869. Their residence, built in 1871 on Court St., Bartlett, Tennessee is now the Bartlett Museum."

Cav.) von Forrests Regiment 1862: kämpfte bei Shiloh und Corinth: diente trotz schwerer Verwundung tapfer in Bolivar: wurde gefangen genommen, ausgetauscht und diente bis zum Ende des Krieges. Nach Bartlett zurückgekehrt, war ein angesehener Müller und Entkörner . Erfand einen verbesserten Baumwollspender (Pat. 29. November 1881). Heiratete 1869 Julia Coleman. Ihr 1871 erbautes Wohnhaus in der Court St., Bartlett, Tennessee, ist heute das Bartlett Museum.“
