Police officers who died in the Seinan War, the Japanese Civil War, in 1877 were enshrined at Yasukuni Shrine as honored war dead, but police officers who died in the line of duty arresting thugs or guarding disasters were not even mourned.
"Yayoi Shrine" was built on October 7, 1885 for mourning for those who died in the line of duty.
The first 96 memorials were dedicated to the 94 police and firefighters who had died in the line of duty since 1871, as well as to two persons who had made special contributions to the police and fire departments.
The shrine was relocated to its current location in October 1947. The name was changed to "Yayoi Mausoleum" when the shrine was relocated to its current location.
