This classic museum was inaugurated in 1851. It was deeply renovated from 1895 and most of what we can see there today is from the early 20th century.

A couple of rooms are dedicated to the participation of Portugal in the First World War, a late participation (1917) but one which had a deep impact in the country, specially in the political balance of the nation.

Portugal send the CEP (Corpo Expedicionário Português) to Belgium, where it was pretty much wiped out in a single day in La Lys. Also had skirmish was in Africa, as Portuguese colonies bordered German colonies.

There are plenty of WW I artefacts on display. Helmets, artillery, armoury, badges, uniforms, general equipment, etc.
