English translation

The memory of Rodrigo Maseda, José Antonio Villamor and Javier López, the three officers who died while unsuccessfully trying to rescue a young Slovakian on January 27, 2011, presides over the shell of A Coruña's Orzán beach.

A sculptural work devised by the president of the A Coruña delegation of the College of Architects, José Manuel López Mihura, is the tribute with which the city remembers forever the heroic act of the three agents.

The three agents, forever known as the "heroes of the Orzán" died in the early hours of January 27, 2011 when they were trying to rescue a young man, Tomás Velicky, 23, originally from Bratislava.

Maseda and Villamor were in the area in plain clothes when they were alerted that the young man had been swallowed by the sea while trying to get his feet wet.

Both officers did not hesitate for a second to dive for him despite the complicated sea situation -that day there was an orange alert-, being dragged by a large wave along with another policeman, José Antonio Villamor, who also entered the water to help his colleagues.

Together they managed to form a human chain and even managed to grab the young Slovakian they were trying to rescue, but the force of the sea ended up dragging them.

The lifeless bodies of the three officers and the young Slovakian were recovered in the following weeks after an intense search operation in which many personnel took part, who also wanted to thank with this morning's event for their effort and dedication.

In the days following the tragedy there were many acts of homage and even a small altar with candles, photographs and flowers was set up in the vicinity of the promenade.

That silent tribute of thousands of neighbors has been the germ of the sculptural work that presides from today one of the most emblematic places of the Galician city.

The shell of the Orzán, tourist stamp of the city next to the Tower of Hercules, has been forever linked to the memory of the three agents, who that early morning in January 2011 gave a lesson in humanity that no one will forget.
