The Ghadira wetlands are an extremely important habitat for birds, especially migratory birds. Around 140 species of migrating birds are seen annually. "Ghadira Nature Reserve is a fully protected bird sanctuary, a Ramsar site, and a Special Area of Conservation within the EU Natura 2000 network" (

Examples of birds you can see here at the site are egrets, redshanks and sandpipers.
At the entrance there is a nature center. Here there is a good overview of the entire area, and the many binoculars are free to use. On the many boards you can read about the birds, both the stationary and migratory birds. At the opposite end of the lake there is a bird observatory, and then here there are binoculars and boards. A really exciting place.
The migratory birds come from Africa, where they have wintered before flying to, among other places, Scandinavia. Malta is a rest on the journey.
In the past, there was a hunt for the many small migratory birds that were caught in large nets and eaten with great pleasure. However, this is now banned, but poachers still do it.
