The statue represents Maria, mother of Jesus.
Mary is known from biblical references, which are, however, too sparse to construct a coherent biography. The development of the doctrine of Mary can be traced through titles that have been ascribed to her in the history of the Christian communions—guarantee of the Incarnation, virgin mother, second Eve, mother of God, ever virgin, immaculate, and assumed into heaven. This statue is cut out of an old beech from 1867 had to be cut down because the tree was affected by fungus. It was therefore not safe to leave it there. The parsonage garden of the church is a public space. The idea arose from the village to give the wood a second life.
It was quickly decided that the statue should be Mary, because the tree was in the garden of the Maria Church. The image was not really cut from good wood, because the straight piece that was suitable turned out to be hollow inside due to the fungus.
