Museum de Oude Aarde

The museum was founded in 1969 by René Boissevain. The first stones that found their place in the museum were self-collected Australian agates. The most beautiful were put in a display cabinet and could then be viewed for a quarter. The other agates were sold in the shop.
The museum has been expanded with all kinds of minerals, gemstones and fossils. A special item in the collection is an egg of the largest bird in the world, the Aepyornis maximus (mammoth ostrich).
This bird was found in Madagascar and became extinct in the 17th century. By reconstructing bones into complete skeletons, researchers have discovered that these birds could weigh up to 800 kg.
The egg on display here is 32 cm high, 25 cm wide and the content is equivalent to 180 regular chicken eggs.
The largest known bird species also lays the largest eggs.
Type of documentation of superlative status: Info signs in the museum and information found on Wikipedia.
