At the top of the monument is the statue of Arturo Prat. On the second level you can see those of Ignacio Serrano, Ernesto Riquelme, Juan de Dios Aldea and a generic sailor.

On the four sides of the main body are engraved, in relief, the naval battles of Iquique, Punta Gruesa, Angamos and Arica, with the dates on which they took place, and on the front and back of the central body the following inscriptions can be read: «To its martyred heroes», «The Homeland recognized».

Underground there is a solid vault that encloses in niches the remains of Prat, Condell, Serrano, Aldea and other chiefs and officers who participated in these combats. The monument is surrounded by a garden and a valuable iron gate.

The War of the Pacific (Spanish: Guerra del Pacífico), also known as the Saltpeter War (Spanish: Guerra del salitre) and by multiple other names, was a war between Chile and a Bolivian–Peruvian alliance from 1879 to 1884. Fought over Chilean claims on coastal Bolivian territory in the Atacama Desert, the war ended with a Chilean victory, which gained for the country a significant amount of resource-rich territory from Peru and Bolivia.
