Valletta is the capital of Malta and is built like a fortification with the streets perpendicular to each other. Valletta is named after its founder, the Grand Master of the Order of St. John, Jean Parisot de la Valette.
Construction started in 1566 and only 15 years later there was a city with a cathedral, bastions and forts. The city is one of the most concentrated historical areas in the world. It is also included in the UNESCO World Heritage List.
You can spend many hours walking around the city and seeing the historic buildings and monuments. And a visit to Saint John's Co-Cathedral is recommended. A masterpiece of decoration, decorated walls and marble floors as well as many paintings.
If you are interested in Art Deco, the 5-star Hotel Phoenica is worth a visit.
Take a walk along the city's defenses, which consist of massive walls built in sandstone, visit parks and cannon batteries. Many beautiful vantage points over the harbour, for example from the Upper Barrakka Garden there is a view over the harbour. Twice a day the cannons facing the Grand Harbor are fired.
Valletta and Malta suffered great damage during World War II. You can see many memorials and monuments from this.

It is free to visit the city. A visit in Saint John's Co-Cathedral costs €15.00 . The Co Cathedral is open from 09:30 hrs to 14:30 hrs (last entry 14.00 hrs).
