Hotel Phoenicia is a 5 star hotel in Malta, built in Art Deco style.
The architect behind the building is the Scottish architect William Binnie.
Many years passed from the start of construction to the opening of the hotel. The construction of the Art Deco hotel started in the 1930s and was almost completed in 1939. But when World War II broke out, the finished part of the buildings was requisitioned by the British military and the Royal Air Force personnel moved in. In April 1942, the hotel was hit by aerial bombardment. The damaged hotel was rebuilt and completed in April 1948.
The hotel therefore only opened as a hotel in November 1947. In the 1960s, another floor was built at the hotel.
Built in Maltese limestone, the building is chevron-shaped with the main entrance as the most distinctive part. It consists of three arched entrances and decorations of flowers. Windows on the ground floor are also arched at the top.
The balconies on the other floors are surrounded by decorative iron fences.
