Takayama is a city located in Gifu Prefecture in Japan. The high altitude and separation from other parts of Japan kept the region quite isolated, allowing Takayama to develop its own culture over a period of around 300 years.

The economy of Takayama is strongly based on tourism, agriculture, and woodworking. This city was selected as one of the top ten travel destinations in Asia by Lonely Planet Magazine in the year 2017. Takayama is only 20 miles of the World Heritage Site, Historic Village of Shirakawa-go and its thatched-roof cottages.

Hida Kokubunji Temple ia a National Historical Site and Important Cultural Treasure. There is a huge ginko tree over 1200 years old and a ‘Triple Pagoda’ in the precincts, as well as Bell Tower Gates, said to have been moved from Takayama Castle and the cornerstone of the pagoda built over 1200 years ago. The main temple building is the oldest structure in the city, constructed in the Muromachi era (about 500 years ago). It has a style worthy of its reputation as Hida’s greatest ancient temple. Takayama Festival Floats Exhibition Hall houses 11 floats for the fall Takayama festival. They rotate the floats 3 times a year (March, July, and November) putting 4 on display each time. In a revival of the festival parade, a shrine maiden takes visitors on a tour. (third photo)

A one-tenth scale replica of the Nikko Tosho-gu Shrine can be seen at the Sakurayama Hachimangu Shrine in Takayama. (4th and 5th photos)
