Guanyin is an East Asian goddess of mercy, and a bodhisattva associated with compassion as venerated by Mahayana Buddhists. Commonly known in English as Goddess of Mercy, Guanyin is also revered by Chinese Taoists as an immortal. In Chinese folk religion there are mythical accounts about Guanyin's origins that are not associated to the Avalokitesvara described in Buddhist sutras. In Macau, Hong Kong and southern China, the name is pronounced Gwun Yam or Gun Yam in the Cantonese language, also written as Kwun Yam in Hong Kong or Kun Iam in Macau. (visit link)

She engenders, nourishes, smiles at the vitality of creation, and has sympathy for all beings as a mother does for her children.
