Giraldillo Weathervane - Seville, Spain - Drawing Waymarks on Waymarking.com

The Giralda is a former minaret that was converted to a bell tower for the Cathedral of Seville. The fact that the giraldillo, atop the bell tower, acts as a weathervane, turning according to the direction of the wind, gave the tower its name, Giralda, from “girar”, “to turn”.

The giraldillo was cast in bronze between 1566 and 1568 by Bartolomé Morel who used a model, probably by sculptor Juan Bautista Vázquez the Elder, from a drawing by Luis de Vargas.

This massive sculpture is four meters tall, not counting the base on which it turns, and it represents Faith, the triumph of Christianity. It represents a woman in a long dress, a palm in one hand and in the other a warrior shield.
