Niels Ryberg Finsen was a Faroese-Danish doctor who received the Nobel Prize in Medicine in 1903. He was the first Nobel Prize winner from both the Faroe Islands and Denmark.
Niels Ryberg Finsen received the Nobel Prize for his research into the disease-preventing and healing effects of light.
Niels Finsen himself had an illness and had problems with his heart all his life. He died half a year after receiving the Nobel Prize.
Niels Finsen was born on the Faroe Islands and lived here with his siblings and parents until 1884 when the whole family moved to Denmark.
When Niels Finsen graduated as a doctor, he began researching light treatment of skin diseases. He became known when he introduced light therapy as a cure for various skin diseases, above all Lupus vulgaris. When he wrote a thesis "On the Medical Use of Concentrated Chemical Light Rays" in 1896 in connection with the cure of the first light-treated Lupus patient, it led to the establishment of the "Finsen Medical Light Institute"
