De laatste keer dat de fontein in volle glorie spoot, was in 2016 tijdens de Giro d'Italia. Het water was toen speciaal voor die gelegenheid roze gekleurd. Sindsdien is de fontein defect al jaren defect.

"De Blauwe Golven is een kunstwerk van Peter Struycken, uitgewerkt als inrichting van de openbare ruimte van het Roermondsplein in de Nederlandse plaats Arnhem. Gelijk aan de naam bestaat de inrichting van de ruimte tussen de doorgaande wegen voornamelijk uit een blauw-wit, golvend patroon, met als in het westelijk deel een grote fontein. Het geheel is in 1977 gelijktijdig met de Nelson Mandelabrug en Roermondsplein aangelegd. De blauwe golven refereren naar het gegeven dat in vroeger tijden zich op deze plek de Oude Haven bevond, die de stad met de Rijn verbond. Het kunstwerk is min of meer driehoekig van vorm en ongeveer 150 × 300 × 500 meter groot.

Het plein was in zijn oorspronkelijk ontwerp al bedoeld als parkeerterrein. In 1978 werd het plein hiervoor echter om veiligheidsreden al gelijk weer afgesloten. In 2010 werd het parkeren, door het steeds groter wordende parkeerprobleem, op een gedeelte van de Blauwe Golven weer mogelijk gemaakt.Daartoe werden met oranje verf parkeervakken op de inmiddels sterk vervuilde klinkers aangebracht. Het kunstwerk maakte al met al sinds 2010 een verrommelde indruk. Naast de oranje strepen, stond de fontein droog en was ook de oostelijke kadewand sterk vervuild."

The last time the fountain spouted in all its glory was in 2016 during the Giro d'Italia. The water was colored pink especially for that occasion. Since then, the fountain has been malfunctioning for years.

"The Blue Waves is a work of art by Peter Struycken, developed as a design for the public space of Roermondsplein in the Dutch town of Arnhem. Similar to the name, the layout of the space between the through roads mainly consists of a blue and white, undulating pattern, with a large fountain in the western part. The whole was constructed in 1977 at the same time as the Nelson Mandela Bridge and Roermondsplein. The blue waves refer to the fact that in earlier times the Oude Haven was located on this spot, which connected the city with the Rhine. The artwork is more or less triangular in shape and approximately 150 × 300 × 500 meters in size.

In its original design, the square was already intended as a parking lot. In 1978, however, the square was immediately closed for safety reasons. In 2010, due to the growing parking problem, parking was made possible again on part of the Blue Waves. To this end, parking spaces were applied to the now heavily polluted cobblestones with orange paint. All in all, since 2010, the artwork has made a messed up impression. In addition to the orange stripes, the fountain was dry and the eastern quay wall was also heavily polluted."
