"Its construction began in 1551 and continued for almost two centuries after various reconstructions and extensions. The temple has a mixture of architectural features from the Renaissance, Baroque, Neo-Gothic and Neoclassical styles. In a sector of the Cathedral there is a museum of sacred art (Museo de la Catedral) of the most important in Bolivia. Due to this long period of construction, it combines a Baroque and Renaissance style with mestizo influences.

Its tower has images of the twelve apostles and four evangelists worked in terracotta and the Museum of the Cathedral has one of the best collections in Bolivia of Sacred Art from the 16th to the 19th century.

Next to the cathedral is the chapel of the Virgin of Guadalupe (1617), which houses the image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, the patron saint of the city of Sucre, painted by Fray Diego de Ocaña in 1601. The population of Sucre has covered This image of jewelry and ornaments, in a cloak, can be seen on the silver plate embossed with precious stones, pearls. She is known as the Mamita de Guadalupe.
