Born into a family of artists (her grandfather was prolific western artist John Mix Stanley) it was only natural that she pursued an artistic career. She studied at the Boston Museum School of Fine Art as well as the Corcoran School of Art and the Phillips Gallery School in Washington DC. Several exhibitions of her paintings, mainly watercolors, were held in DC galleries and she had at least one major traveling exhibition.

But she is mostly known as the wife of Dean Acheson, lawyer and influential statesman during the Franklin D. Roosevelt and Harry S. Truman administrations. Her husband once rued having lived too long, preferring to have died while still in office. He lived to the ripe old age of 78. Alice Acheson outlived her husband by 22 years: She died in 1996 at the age of 100.
