Since 1975 the historic town of Thirlmere in Sydney's southwest has been home to a significant rail heritage collection, including over 100 rolling stock items, associated with the history of the railways in NSW.

The 5-hectare rail corridor site and much of the collection is owned by the NSW Government.

The museum is located on a loop line which allows the museum to run trains along a track which is not part of the main southern line.

During spring and autumn weekends diesel powered trains run along the line. In winter, steam trains run along the loop.

Facilities provide restoration and maintenance services for the expensive heritage fleet of historic engines and carriages.
