[EN] The small fortress of Monastir has been enlarged over the centuries to become a vast complex of four buildings overlooking two interior courtyards.

At the end of the Middle Ages, it was a great religious center where students flocked. Some historians even believe that part of the monument was fitted out to house women.

The city of Monastir was then a holy city – it was said to be “one of the gates of paradise” – and its Ribat, a kind of “Muslim monastery”.

Precisely, it is from an old Christian monastery that the city of Monastir takes its name.

Ruins of a Byzantine building, discovered in 2014, confirm the presence of this monastery mentioned by ancient historians.

Thus, Monastir, by changing its religion to become Muslim, has retained its former vocation...

In addition to the small rooms dedicated to the worshiping Mujahideen who were performing prayer and meditation during their military duty, the ribat has two mosques, the largest of which hosts a unique collection of worshiping materials and traditional medieval industrial materials today.
