Statue of King Karl Xl, founder of the city of Karlskrona as a base for Sweden's navy. The sculpture was made by the artist John Börjeson in 1897.
Karl XI born 24 November 1655, died 5 April 1697.
He was the only child of King Karl X Gustav of Sweden and Hedwig Eleonora of Holsten-Gottorp. When his father died, Karl was only four years old, but heir to the Swedish throne. His mother, Queen Hedvig Eleonora, remained the formal regent until Charles XI was crowned in 1672. Karl was not good at reading and writing, and subsequently this was interpreted as dyslexia. He was also a very shy child.
In 1680, Karl XI married the Danish princess Ulrika Eleonora. They had seven children, only three of whom reached adulthood.
In 1679, Karl XI decided to found a new city for Sweden's navy, it was named Karlskrona. The city was in a short time developed into one of Northern Europe's foremost military bases and one of Sweden's largest cities.
