The Mercado de Colón is located in the Pla del Remei district, adjacent to the south side of the center of Valencia. A gas factory used to be located on this site. The market was designed in 1914 by Francisco Mora Berenguer (1875 – 1961). He had studied architecture in Barcelona and thus came into contact with Catalan modernism and especially with the work of the famous Gaudí. It took a while before construction could start. The municipality had to be convinced that there should also be a market in this district, so that residents did not have to go 'all the way' to the Mercado Central or the Mercado Ruzafa.
Eventually, the municipality was persuaded and construction could begin. The spectacular opening was on Christmas Eve in 1916. A procession took place from the Plaza de Toros to the Mercado with the merchants and lots of pleasant music. Unfortunately, at the end of the twentieth century, the market deteriorated. Merchants who rented a place retired or closed their stall. Also, the maintenance of the Mercado de Colón was no longer kept up, which drove customers away…
Fortunately, the Mercado de Colón was restored. In 2003 version 2.0 of the Mercado de Colón was finished. It was no longer used as a traditional market, but as a market with bars and cafes. There are two floors, both with catering. It is the place where the Valencian likes to come for breakfast, coffee, a horchata or a drink!
