The sign on the lighthouse wall reads: "El Faro fue construido entre 1950 por la Armada de Chile en el marco del Plan Serena llevado adedante por el Presidente Gabriel Gonzalez Videla.
El Faro Monumental por su ubicacion y caracter monumental constituye un elemento de identitad social, que se ha convertido en hito turistico a nivel nacional indisolublemente integrado a la imagen de la ciudad.
Su valor estetico y arquitectonico esta defin ido por su proprcion, adaptado para la tipologia arquitectonica de un faro, propio del Plan Serena."

Translation: "The Lighthouse was built between 1950 by the Chilean Navy within the framework of the Serena Plan carried out by President Gabriel Gonzalez Videla.
The Monumental Lighthouse, by its location and monumental character, constitutes an element of social identity, which has become a national tourist landmark inextricably integrated into the image of the city.
Its aesthetic and architectural value is defined by its proportion, adapted to the architectural typology of a lighthouse, typical of the Serena Plan."
