This location is that of an interpretive panel which stands at the beginning of the Federlesmahd interpretive trail. It's also on the edge of a parking lot.

The location is on the edge of the Schönbuch highland. If you go about 100 meters along the old Postroad to the northeast in the direction of Echterdingen or about 500 meters to the southeast in the direction of Stetten, then you will see laying before you the Filder lowland.

The highland is forested and the lowland there are fields. This contrast is a result of the geology.

In the Tertiary period, 15 to 20 million years ago, a movement below the crust caused the crust to fracture. The resulting rift was plugged by the slowly sinking wedge of rock. This fromed a techtonic formation called a "graben". In the graben, the identical sedimentary layers lie around 100 meters lower in elevation than on the rim. Sedimentary layers from the lower Black Jurassic form the heights of the "Federlesmahd" and the "Kernen". They are also found in the Fildergraben. Only, there they are mostly covered by several meters of loess soil (loess is fine, windblown, dust resulting from the grinding action of glaciers). In the last 200,000 years during the iceages, this dust, born by duststorms from the upper Rhine plateau, was deposited in the Fildergraben. The resulting loess soil is highly fertile and has resulted in an important agricultural area.
