In Duitsland en Limburg lopen ze er achteloos voorbij: een vakwerkhuis. Maar in Amersfoort komen ze bijna niet voor en het is dan ook mooi dat we er nog eentje hebben.

En wat voor een! In de Lieve Vrouwestraat staat op nummer 6 en 8 een vakwerk dubbelhuis uit 1525, met zij- en achtergevels van baksteen, maar met een fraaie houtconstructie in de voorgevel. Stichting Stadsherstel heeft dit dubbelhuis in 1973 van de sloop gered.

Daarna is het pand ingrijpend gerestaureerd en de gevel gereconstrueerd, dat wil zeggen teruggebracht in de vorm die het gehad zou kunnen hebben. Prachtig is de overstekende horizontale balk bovenaan de voorgevel. Ook de onderpui is bijzonder. De houten constructie is daar opgevuld met baksteen metselwerk. In vroeger tijden deed men dat met leem en stro.

Zeker zo opvallend is de rode kleur van de balken, het zogenaamde ossenbloedrood. Vroeger zou men ossenbloed als verf hebben gebruikt, omdat de bloedplaatjes een goed bindmiddel zouden zijn. Maar er is twijfel of dat echt is gebeurd. Wel bestaat er vanaf de 15e eeuw een verfkleur met die naam. Verder zijn de luiken donkergroen, bij uitstek een buitenpigment dat tegen een stootje kan. Rood en groen zijn ook nog eens complementaire kleuren: ze laten elkaar stralen!

In Germany and Limburg they casually pass by: a half-timbered house. But in Amersfoort they are almost non-existent and it is therefore nice that we still have one.

And what kind! In the Lieve Vrouwestraat, at numbers 6 and 8, there is a half-timbered double house from 1525, with side and rear facades of brick, but with a beautiful wooden construction in the front facade. The City Recovery Foundation saved this double house from demolition in 1973.

Subsequently, the building was radically restored and the facade reconstructed, i.e. returned to the form it could have had. The crossing horizontal bar at the top of the facade is beautiful. The lower facade is also special. The wooden construction is filled with brick masonry. In earlier times, this was done with loam and straw.

Just as striking is the red color of the beams, the so-called oxblood red. In the past, ox blood would have been used as paint, because the platelets would be a good binder. But there is doubt whether that really happened. There has been a paint color with that name since the 15th century. Furthermore, the shutters are dark green, an excellent outer pigment that can take a beating. Red and green are also complementary colors: they make each other shine!
