L1956:27 Minnesmärke, Fornlämning, Brömsebrostenen

The memorial for the peace in Brömsebro 1645 is located on a small islet at the border between Blekinge and Kalmar. The peace stone was erected to commemorate the peace of 1645 and was unveiled during the First World War on 15 August 1915. The governors of Kalmar and Karlskrona as well as the priest in Torsås gave speeches and the whole arrangement was attended by many spectators.

The granite stone is 3.15 m high, 0.7 m wide and 0.3 m thick.
It is engraved on one side only. The engraving is a twisted pattern, similar to an inverted S, with a text.

The text on the stone:
(Swedish: Minne af freden i Brömsebro 1645 De laThuillerie, Axel Oxenstierna, Corfitz Ulfeldt. Stenen restes 1915)

(Translated text on the stone: : Memory of the peace in Brömsebro 1645 De laThuillerie, Axel Oxenstierna, Corfitz Ulfeldt. The stone was raised 1915)

The Torstensson War (1643-1645) The background to the Torstensson War was Sweden's aim to conquer the Danish provinces Skåne, Halland and Blekinge in order to weaken Danish control over the Øresund. It was necessary so that the relations between Sweden and the continent could be strengthened.

The negotiations in 1645 between Swedish Axel Oxenstierna, Danish Corfitz Ulfeldt and peace mediator de la Thuillerie took several days before an agreement was reached.
Sweden took over Jämtland, Härjedalen, Gotland, Halland and Ösel from Denmark and became a much larger country. Furthermore, Denmark had to reduce the Øresund customs duty. This was the end of the Torstensson War. (visit link)
