In an area of the country that’s known for pricey extravagance, it’s nice to know that something is free. And on top of that, it’s one of the 1000 places to see before you die (and it’s dog friendly). The Cliff Walk along the southeastern shore of Aquidneck Island, extends over three miles and provides wonderful views of the Atlantic Ocean and rocky shoreline on one side and the opulent mansions of the Gilded Age on the other. It’s been designated a National Historic Trail which also happens to run through a National Historic District.
The most notable mansions that are easily seen from the Cliff Walk are Rosecliff, which was Jay Gatsby’s house in ‘The Great Gatsby’ movie (the Robert Redford/Mia Farrow one) and the granddaddy of them all, the Breakers, summer “cottage” of Cornelius Vanderbilt II. The posted coordinates are for the north entrance to the Cliff Walk but there are other access points. And although there is no entrance fee, you may have to pay to park your car.
