There are different types of rock art. The three most used types are polished, carved or painted. The reindeer here at the Sagelva river are polished rock art made in the Stone Age. It is believed that polished stone art is made by rubbing a stone against a rock, creates a contour representation.

The two reindeer are made in natural size 1:1 on a steep cliff. The northernmost reindeer has a length of 2.77 meters and a height of 1.47 meters. It is the one that is most clearly visible. The southern reindeer is harder to see but has been measured at 2.34 meters in length and 1.41 meters in height.

It is also assumed that the water level in the Stone Age 9,000 years ago was much higher. So high, in fact, that it looked like the reindeer were running at the edge of the Salvega river.

The rock art is close to the Europavej E6 at Tømmerneset in Nordland. From the car park you have to walk a few hundred meters, pass a small bridge by the river and then you can see an information board. From the information board you can see the rock art on the other side of the river.
