Het reddingstation Oostmahorn genoot tot 1969 echter een grote bekendheid, niet in de laatste plaats vanwege haar eerste schipper: Mees Toxopeus. Not sailors (they had never sailed before) but they wanted to try. On the first practice trip, they became so seasick that they immediately withdrew. Not long after, a permanent, capable crew formed. Among them was helmsman Jaap van der Meulen. He was born in Oostmahorner and later, as skipper of the IJmuider lifeboat Neeltje Jacoba, he was awarded the large gold medal of the Redding Maatschappij. Skipper Toxopeus would earn a similar award with his Insulinde in 1938.
