Several environmental emergency locations have been found and documented by the province of Noord Brabant. I was amazed to find out that several of them are actually in the city of my hometown Waalwijk.

About the location - Gedempte Haven
The Gedempte Haven was previously a harbor (literal translation is Muted Port). The location is near the industrial area in Waalwijk (north side of town, near the motorway). Probably, the harbour has been filled with land which was contaminated (this information was not clear on the provincial website). The following elements have been found in the ground cadmium, mercury, lead and zinc. Currently the area is in use as a parking lot.
About contaminated location in Noord Brabant:
"Contaminated locations in Noord Brabant - The Netherlands
For the whole of Brabant, with the exception of the 5 large municipalities, the province has drawn up an up-to-date overview of soil contamination with risks for humans, plants or animals and risks of spreading via the groundwater.
These are called emergency locations. The 5 large municipalities (Eindhoven, Helmond, Tilburg, 's Hertogenbosch and Breda) have their own overview of emergency locations.
Overview emergency locations
The overview of urgent locations in Brabant was updated in November 2018. The province is working with water boards and municipalities on soil remediation. "

Future plans for the area:
The city of Waalwijk is planning to upgrade the Gedempte Haven area, this will mean that the soil remediation will definetly happen. A video with more information (in Dutch) about the new housing project can be found here: (
