Most UK pubs have a pictorial representation of their name and Crossed Keys are common in towns with important churches. Beverley has a minster and a large sister church of St. Mary and in Medieval times the town had many pilgrims who came to visit the shrine of St. John in the Minster.

An information plaque on the wall of the pub tells us that Cross (or crossed) keys are the emblem of St. Peter who held the keys to the gates of heaven.
