A collection of love padlocks hang among stanchions overlooking the Seekonk and Providence Rivers' confluence at India Point Park in the Fox Point neighborhood of Providence, Rhode Island. There are about 100 locks attached to chains stretched between five concrete bollards on the south-facing shoreline by the mouth of the Seekonk River. Many were inscribed by hand, a few were machine engraved, and one couple - 2,400 miles from their native Portuguese island - included a plaque between their pair of brass Master Lock padlocks. It reads:
CECILIA and EMANUEL
CARREIRO
They met in their golden years
And golden they made them
Both born in Azores
in 1955 and 1954
