The Jeolla Line and a railway station in Jeonju date back to 1914 and the Japanese occupation. The current alignment of the line and location of the station have been in place since the late 1970s. The following text is taken from the sign of history at Jeonju Station.
Jeonju Station opened as an ordinary station on the Iksan-Jeonju section of the Jeolla Line in November 1914. The station building was established in the following year. In 1936, the Jeolla Line was extended and thus the station was reconstructed as a Hanok-style building when moving to where Jeonju City Hall stands today. In May 1981, a new station inheriting the old Hanok roof tiles was built in the current location, along with the relocation of the Jeolla Line. Today, all passenger trains, including the KTX, stop at Jeonju Station. Hence, it serves as a gateway to the traditional cultural city with three million visitors a year. Jeonju Station would become the first railway station to be reconstructed based upon the International Design Competition that took place in May 2019.
