This is not only the last hand operated water pump in the town of Beverley, but the last Owens pump in the north of England.

The pump is within sight of St. Mary's Church on North Bar Within. There is a bronze plaque on the wall next to it that tells of its history.
Beverley Civic Society
This fine Victorian water pump, the last remaining
of Beverley's many public pumps, made by Samuel Owens
of Whitefriars, London was installed during the 1860s.
The design is what is known as 'Enriched Gothic',
and the colours recreate authentic colours of the period.

The Borough of Beverley Council must have wished to
make an impression purchasing an expensive pump from
London and not from one of Beverley's own foundries. This
is the only Owens pump of this design extant in the North,
others are in the South, one being at Hampton Court.

Over the years it had lost its spout and handle and
the Civic Society commissioned its restoration in 2020 by
Slinden Services in Debyshire using 3D scans and moulds
taken from an identical intact pump in Esher, Surrey.

The project was generously supported by Yorkshire Water,
The Beveley Arms, (Daniel Thwaites),
Beverley Town Council, East Riding of Yorkshire Council,
and a number of private citizens, and was managed by
members Richard Fatkin and Richard Lidwell.
There is on street parking controlled by parking meters next to the pump.
