These pseudo "caves of Mandrin", built in 1845, when Mandrin, the famous bandit from the Dauphiné region, died in 1755, are battery caves intended to take an enemy who would advance on the glacis of the "keep" of the Bastille, built according to the principles established by General Haxo. They include embrasures and a recess used as a powder magazine. Originally, the access was only from the bottom. The one communicating with the glacis is more recent.
