Canton Lake was created in 1948 when the US Army Corps of Engineers constructed a 15,000-foot dam. The lake is a backup reservoir for Oklahoma City, which retains storage rights; when needed, water is released to the North Canadian River and flows into Lake Overholser and then Lake Hefner. The lake is open to fishing, boating, and swimming. With forty-five miles of shoreline, there are several beaches; this is one that is particularly accessible, with plenty of parking nearby.
