Point Street Bridge - Providence, Rhode Island - Moving Bridges on Waymarking.com

The third and current version of the swinging Point Street Bridge in Providence, Rhode Island, was built in 1927. The first, from 1872, had a swing span of 249 feet and two shore spans of 145 feet. New granite piers and abutments came in 1907 and the approaches were divided into three plate-girder spans. There wasn't enough funding to replace the swing span, so its length was increased to 284 feet. Boston Bridge Works, "a popular engineering firm that built bridges throughout New England during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries", constructed this current bridge. It was last moved in 1959 because the Fox Point Hurricane Barrier, completed in 1966, now blocks upstream travel of large ships.

Rehabilitated in 1999, the 528-foot long, 39-foot wide bridge carries two lanes of vehicular traffic, pedestrian sidewalks and bicycle lanes east/west across the Providence River. Bike lane markings were added in 2013. Bridge deck access is available by way of South Water Street and Eddy Street.
