The Royal Engineers were sent to Norfolk Island to design and build public works, including drainage and sewerage, bridges, roads and seawalls, gaols and military garrisons.
The Royal Engineers managed a team of convict labourers and worked from the nearby old carpenter's shop. The Royal Engineers Office was built in c.1850.
Additions, including the portico and the two rear rooms, were constructed in 1851
The Pitcairn settlers used the building as a residence from 1856. In 1897 it was the home of Police Constable John Buffett, and was used as the Signal Master's residence between 1919 and 1948.
