Het Refter, midden in het centrum van Zwolle, had in zijn lange geschiedenis veel functies. Van 1905 tot 1915 vond in het pand de Zwolse graanbeurs plaats.

Hoewel dit pand het refter heet, zal dit deel van het Bethlehemkloostercomplex vermoedelijk niet als eetzaal, maar als administratiegebouw van het klooster hebben gediend. Na de Reformatie hebben verschillende gilden het gebouw gebruikt. Zo werden er schermlessen gegeven en toneelvoorstellingen gehouden. Sinds de Franse tijd werd het als garnizoensmagazijn gebruikt. Van 1846 tot 1905 was hier het museum van de Overijsselse Vereniging tot ontwikkeling van provinciale welvaart gevestigd. Later is dit museum verplaatst naar het Drostenhuis aan de Melkmarkt 41. Aansluitend werd in het Refter de Zwolse graanbeurs gevestigd. In 1910 wilde met het gebouw slopen om hier een lagere school te bouwen. De Kroon vernietigde dit raadsbesluit op verzoek van de Koninklijke Nederlandse Oudheidkundige Bond. Tussen de Bethlehemskerk en het Refter lag vroeger de Armenkamer. Uitdeling van geld, kleding en eten vond hier plaats, tot het in 1912 werd gesloopt en een doorgang naar de Nieuwe Markt ontstond. Na de ingrijpende restauratie van het Refter in 1915 zijn hier de gemeentelijke handelsschool (1917-1966) de ANWB en de VVV gevestigd (tot 1979). Nadat Stichting Het Refter en de Hervormde gemeente dit gebouw gebruikten voor vergaderingen en catechisaties is het nu in gebruik als grandcafé.

Although this building is called the refectory, this part of the Bethlehem Monastery complex probably served not as a dining room, but as the monastery's administration building. After the Reformation, several guilds used the building. For example, fencing lessons were given and stage performances were held. It has been used as a garrison warehouse since French times. From 1846 to 1905, the museum of the Overijssel Association for the Development of Provincial Prosperity was located here. This museum was later moved to the Drostenhuis at 41 Melkmarkt. Subsequently, the Zwolle grain exchange was established in the Refter. In 1910 wanted to demolish the building in order to build a primary school here. The Crown annulled this council decision at the request of the Royal Dutch Antiquities Association. The Poor Room used to be located between the Bethlehemskerk and the Refter. Distribution of money, clothing and food took place here, until it was demolished in 1912 and a passage to the Nieuwe Markt was created. After the extensive restoration of the Refter in 1915, the municipal trade school (1917-1966) the ANWB and the VVV are located here (until 1979). After the Het Refter Foundation and the Reformed Municipality used this building for meetings and catechisations, it is now used as a grand café.
