Begin september 1930 werd onder grote belangstelling de grootste gedenk-/gevelsteen van de stad Zwolle onthuld. In de zijgevel van het pand Sassenstraat 53, aan de stadszijde van de Sassenpoort was een menigte verzameld bij het onder zware gordijnen verstopte kunstwerk.

Het kunstwerk c.q. de gevelsteen was ontworpen ter herinnering aan het 700-jarig bestaan van onze stad (1230-1930). Het ontwerp was van de in Zwolle geboren kunstenaar Co Breman en de uitvoering lag in handen van Co Breman Inv.t. en Ed Jacobs Fecit.

Op de gevelsteen is de Aartsengel Michaël, de schutspatroon van Zwolle afgebeeld met het wapenschild van onze stad in zijn handen. Met zijn mantel van stralen beschermd en beschijnt hij de zittende Bisschop Willebrand, die de Stadsbrief gaat overhandigen aan de twee geknielde edelmannen.

Aan de onderzijde van de gevelsteen staat de tekst: "Ter herinnering aan het 700 jarig bestaan - van Zwolle als stad Willebrand bisschop van Utrecht verleent - 31 augustus 1230 den Zwollenaren de stadsrechten - het embleem van St. Michaël wordt het wapen der stad."

At the beginning of September 1930, the largest memorial/facade stone in the city of Zwolle was unveiled with great interest. In the side wall of the building Sassenstraat 53, on the city side of the Sassenpoort, a crowd gathered at the artwork hidden under heavy curtains.

The work of art or the facing brick was designed to commemorate the 700th anniversary of our city (1230-1930). The design was by the Zwolle-born artist Co Breman and the execution was in the hands of Co Breman Inv.t. and Ed Jacobs Fecit.

On the gable stone is the Archangel Michael, the patron saint of Zwolle, with the coat of arms of our city in his hands. With his cloak protected from rays, he shines on the seated Bishop Willebrand, who is about to hand the City Letter to the two kneeling noblemen.

At the bottom of the gable stone is the text: "In memory of the 700th anniversary - of Zwolle as city Willebrand bishop of Utrecht - 31 August 1230 grants the inhabitants of Zwolle the city rights - the emblem of St. Michael becomes the coat of arms of the city."
