In Linnéparken, just 100m southwest of Växjö Cathedral, there is a bust of the Swedish naturalist Carl von Linné surrounded by flowers. The bronze bust corresponds approximately to the natural dimensions: upper body and head together are about 60cm high and is mounted on a square stone base of about 1.3m. The name "Carl von Linné" is written on the lower part of the bust itself, and the surname "Linné" is also listed on the stone base. The bust was created by John Börjeson in 1909.

Carl Nilsson Linnæus (after being knighted Carl von Linné) was born in Råshult in 1707, the eldest son of a clergyman. His enthusiasm for plants was modeled on him by his father and passed on to him at an early age. After attending the cathedral school and the local grammar school in Växjö between 1716 and 1727, Carl studied botany, medicine and physiology in Lund and Uppsala. In 1730 he compiled a catalog of the plants in the Uppsala Botanical Gardens and thereby developed the basic principles for the binary nomenclature still used today in modern botanical and zoological taxonomy.

Several expeditions in Sweden and other European countries contributed to the expansion and consolidation of the classification according to the new system. In 1739 he founded the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences with others, in 1741 he became a professor at Uppsala University and, in addition to teaching, continued to work on his encyclopedia on minerals, plants and animals. In 1756 he was ennobled by King Adolf Friedrich and since then has called himself Carl von Linné. His main work "Systema Naturae", in which the binary nomenclature was used consistently for the first time, was first published in 1758 and revised by him several times until his death in 1778.
