"From the 11th century onwards, the harbor on the Graslei and Korenlei began to flourish. In 1530, the Guild of the Free Schippers bought the property on Graslei from the Molenaarsgilde. At the time, the building was fitted with a new stone facade in Balegemse Sandstone. The facade is an example of Brabant Gothic. The building is characterized by the lightly tinted Balegem sandstone, the rich and detailed decoration, the coats of arms (also of Emperor Charles) and the turrets.
Above the door you see a sailing ship in stone relief.
The building was thoroughly restored for the 1913 World's Fair. The stairwell and the halls on the ground floor were renovated in Neo-Gothic style with detailed wood-carved engravings and figurative murals."
