The theater is located on the north side of Sint-Baafsplein, which was created in 1897 by the demolition of older buildings that obstructed the view of Saint Bavo's Cathedral.

"The theater was built in 1897-1899 on the site of the former Regnessestraat in an eclectic style with mainly Renaissance features, after a design by architect Edmond De Vigne.
It formed the new home base for the professional theater company Nederlandsch Tooneel van Gent (1871-1945), which previously played at the Minardschouwburg. That company was absorbed into the National Theater in 1945, after which the theater functioned as a second plateau for the Antwerp KNS. In 1965 a new theater company was founded with the NTGent.
The facade of the building is dated ANNO 1897, but was inaugurated on October 1, 1899. The facade consists of three storeys of five bays. The central section of three bays is strongly accentuated and is flanked in the second and third storey by four statues of men in 17th-century costume, made by Louis Mast. They represent the four chambers of rhetoric in Ghent: De Fonteine, Sint-Barbara, Sint-Agnete and Maria ter Ere."
