Shuri Castle was part of the Kingdom of the Ryukyus. The original castle dates back to the 13th century and was rebuilt several times after being damaged by fire and finally destroyed during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945. The Castle was the Royal Court of the Ryuku's until 1879 when Japan annexed the Kingdom. The castle seen today was built in the late 1980's is a replica of the original.
