"The Provincial House of Noord-Brabant, which was inaugurated in 1971, forms an unmissable beacon in the Bossche landscape with its idiosyncratic design. There is nothing to indicate that there is still a very special space under that striking building, namely a large nuclear-free air-raid shelter. Popularly, this cellar is better known as "the Bunker".

The construction of the bunker
In 1966, the government gave the go-ahead for the construction of a bunker in 's-Hertogenbosch with an area of ??approximately 52 X 25 meters. In less than two years, 15,000 m3 of earth was excavated, 248 piles were driven (40 x 40 cm, 12.5 meters long), 3,300 m3 of special concrete and 297,000 kg of reinforcing steel were used.

The bunker itself 'weighs' 7,920,000 kilograms, offers protection against conventional weapons and is ABC-suitable. This means that you do not have to fear for Atomic danger, Biological and Chemical warfare agents inside.

There are no photos of the construction, because everything about air-raid shelters was strictly secret. More than a year before Queen Juliana opened the Provincial House in 1971, the bunker was already in use.

A large part of the original emergency administrative post has now been converted into a large, 'normal' basement space where storage and work areas are located for, among other things, the technical service. But another part is still fairly intact and furnished as originally. It can be viewed during guided tours. So that we don't forget how we were in a not so distant past."
