"The "Huel Lee" and the "Amphitheatre" are man-made caves in the Luxembourg Sand stone. The circular marks on the rock walls are relicts from the time that millstones used to be extracted here. This happened mainly during the Middle Ages, but it's suspected that the caves were priory also used during Roman times.
To extract a millstone, a circle was first drawn on the rock and then the circular shape was chis elled until the millstone had the desired thickness. Then behind the millstone, a groove was carved out, into which dry wooden wedges were driven. By adding water, the wood slowly swelled up and generated such strong pressure that the millstone broke away from the rock.
In the Middle Ages, Berdorf and the surrounding area belonged to the Oeren Abbey in Trier.
The "Vugelsmillen" mill in the valley of the Black Ernz on the other side of the Berdorf plateau was a seigneurial mill of this monastery. That is why it had to obtain its millstones from the "Huel Lee" and be supplied from that quarry. The population of Berdorf had to have its grain ground in this mill." Source: Infoboard
