By 2002, Edna Buchanan had written about more than 5,000 violent deaths, first as a Pulitzer Prize-winning reporter at the Miami Herald, and later as a book author. Her latest hit novel was Britt Montero mystery, “The Ice Maiden” (Morrow).

I met Edna Buchanan a little before noon on Saturday, November 23 at the 19th Miami Book Fair International held in Room 1101 (Bldg. 1, 1st Fl.) at Miami-Dade Community College, Wolfson Campus. We were there to hear Jim Kates on “Letters from Mississippi”, a moving collection of personal letters written by volunteers of Mississippi’s “Freedom Summer” in 1964, and Shawn Wilson, a documentary filmmaker, on “Separate, But Equal: The Mississippi Photographs of Henry Clay Anderson.” Edna Buchanan was sitting two chairs away from me in the same row. She signed her photograph in my copy of the Miami Herald Book Fair bulletin.

The next day I went to “It’s a Mystery” panel discussion with Edna Buchanan, Carol Higgins Clark, and Lisa Scottoline on their new work in the Auditorium (Bldg. 1, 2nd Fl.). The women mystery writers are fascinating as they tend to tell tales rather than just read passages out of their books.

I have attended the Miami Book Fair International for five consecutive years, however I did not attend last November. I chose instead to vacation in Orlando, Florida with my daughter, Cat. I am considering attending the 8-day book fair in November 2007, staying at my favorite hotel in South Beach.
