"De Hoge, De Lage and Het Kleine der Aa in Groningen:
The city of Groningen arose at the end of the Hondsrug along the bank of a Drentse stream. Here the Drentsche Aa meandered along the Hondsrug and then continued its journey to the sea via the Reitdiep. Deep into the Middle Ages the oldest harbor district of the city was located here, at what is now called the Hoge der A and the Lage der A.
Ebb and flow:
Until 1877 the city of Groningen was directly connected to the Wadden Sea and you could see ebb and flow in the canals of the city. So it was convenient to have a high and a low quay for easy loading and unloading of ships. The high quay was of course on the side of the Hondsrug.
Hondsrug ramp:
If you walk along the Hoge der A, you can see the height difference of the western Hondsrug flank in Brugstraat and Turftorenstraat. The most beautiful visible Hondsrug slope in the city is the one in Heerestraat and Oosterstraat."
